I run an 87 yj and the power steering gearbox has give up the ghost. It leaks and has become so loose it's scary. I've installed new U Joints, tie rods, ball joints and bearing assemblies in both wheels so I know it's the box. Question - is the box from a Cherokee the same as the YJ? I have access to one but don't want to take it off if it's not going to work. Hope someone can help.. Thanks.

I have heard Durango boxes fit on and are a great swap but I haven't read into what all is needed for the swap if anything.

It's my understanding that Durango steering boxes from a V8 Durango with the snowplow option are the best, and it's a direct bolt on.

Cheapest is a stock replacement rebuilt box, Durango box is a nice replacement.
But quite a few folks report that they loose steering travel with one of those.
It really all depends on what your future plans for your Jeep are
