Best "American Rocker". We agree that Mellencamp is third.

Disagreement/bet with co-worker. I say Petty, he says Broooooooce. He really says it like that...Broooooce.

Dollar menu cheeseburger to the winner.

Go.

Hmmmm. Didn't realize it was so hard to pay attention!
The OP said Petty or Springstein were the choices. I can think of twenty other better ones than both of them.
But THOSE were ONLY TWO to CHOOSE from. It's not rocket surgery.
I'm done. Carry on.

I have my degree in rocket surgery and I can tell you it's no limited choices community poll.

Why such limited choices? There are much better Rockers out there than those guys. But if I have to choose from just them, Springsteen.

Because Petty, Springsteen and Mellencamp are are all solo acts somewhat similar in the style and themes of their songs.

American Girl, Born in the USA, Pink houses etc.

They were among the few "Rock" guys around during the Disco/punk/New wave era (like 75-85) that are still around.

Dylan-Folk
Grohl- Hard rock/metal/grunge
BonJovi- Hair metal/pop rock

The conversation was kinda comparing apples to similar apples.
