I have an 88yj with a straight six... No smog.. weber carb.. If it's sat for more than a few days I have to crank and crank for the manual fuel pump to get fuel to the carb...

So, I'm wanting to put an electric pump on instead that will pre-fill the carb when the key is switched to 'on'...

Any tips, recommendations, caveats? Will any general purpose pump do?

I was thinking of leaving the stock manual pump in place as a 'back up' in case the electric were to ever fail out on the trail.. putting caps on the inlet and outlet.. or perhaps a tube between the inlet and outlet if caps are a problem.......

Gonna eventually upgrade to a CA approved TBI injection system later on when I'm rich and famous, so that I can register the thing and actually drive it places.....

Did you check to see if the fuel filter might be clogged? Is there fuel getting to the pump?
