I will start by saying that since this is a relatively new forum, it DOES NOT YET apply to this one.

Can someone explain to me why there are folks on some forums (some that we are all familiar with) who feel superior to other folks, just because they have been involved in a hobby a little longer than someone else, and managed to complete the monstrous task of signing on to a forum sooner than others?

I was a member on another forum totally unrelated to Jeeps, where there seemed to be fanatical hazing of "noobs" on nearly every post with a valid question. I once posted a news article there that seemed relevant, then got flamed on for a page and a half because a "veteran" had posted the same story earlier in the day under a vague title. Needless to say, I haven't returned to that forum.

Are some folks so small that they feel like knowing a bit about a subject makes them like some sort of demi-god compared to a anonymous stranger who is new to a hobby?

Curious to hear your thoughts/experiences...

I don't really understand those types of people. I guess they just don't have a life anywhere but on the web. I am all for new jeepers or really anyone wanting to learn a new hobby of any kind and the forums are one of the greatest places for knowledge. I would never look down on someone for asking a question that has been asked a thousand times before. We are here to make people fell welcome to be here and help when needed.

I hate the "use the search button" responses.

That's one of the worst...if you are going to take the time to respond, why not just answer the question? On one of the "other" forums, you see that repeatedly. Even if the poster said "tried the search, but"

Sometimes you really can search, but the other thread someone posted either had a title that didn't have anything to do with the content, or it was related in some obscure way.

I don't like the "use the search" people for the same reason as Chris. It would have taken the same amount of effort to just answer the dang question.

This was an answer to a question on another forum I used to check in on frequently...

"It's sad to see what a **** hole this place is now.
The stupidity is over the top, Newbs postin **** anywhere, constantly asking stupid newb questions
....... the place you could once go for the best info on the ******** is shell of what it used to be. Why don't these dumb****** even try a search before they post up questions. OP, try the ****ing search next time or the ban hammer will crush you"

Good example of what I'm talking about, and this dude was a moderator.

That guy is a total douche. I bet all these NEWBS probably never became members for the long term. If I went on a site and they acted like that I would just never come back. Maybe that site doesn't need members to stay running.

The interwebs have always been a place where people will bash others without even blinking. Cuz theyll never see those people in real life so why not act like your a big bad mofo. Its a shame rly. I will always try and help someone in real life or the net no matter what. must of these asshats jump on the net they get there keyboards and try to sound cool using capslock or calling others newbs. Blah

Nope. If it happens let the mods or I know.

I think that's where most communities fail their members.

We all start somewhere. Bringing people people into the hobby is only a good thing for all of us.

Ill say that i would feel very welcome in a forum that answered a question i had, even if it had been asked before. That is the atmosphere we're going for here.

It takes no more effort to answer the question as it does to berate someone for asking a previously answer question.

And welcome radioman! :)
